With the Neuro-4, you have
a range of treatment-specific programs available as plug-in cards.
Each card includes 3 different programs so that you can select the type
of stimulation that will be most beneficial. In most of the cards,
the 3 programs follow a natural progression as treatment advances.
In many of the cards one
of the three programs is suitable for treating flaccid muscle. For
conditions which are not listed, it is likely that one of the existing
cards can be used with good success. We can also provide custom designed
cards to meet the Neuro-4 users specific applications.
The Neuro 4 is conveniently
placed around the waist or in a pocket. It fits in well with an active
lifestyle and adds few problems during transfers, etc.

Facial Paralysis
All forms of palsy respond
to trophic stimulation. With four channels it is now possible to
treat both sides of the face. Long term treatment is also possible,
as in the case of:
1 Moebius Syndrome
2 Guillan Barrie
3 RTA
4 Congenital facial
palsy
Pelvic Floor Weakness
The pelvic floor chip likewise
makes use of the extra channels by allowing for concurrent stimulation
of the Transversus Abdominis
along with the pelvic muscles.
The additional channels also allow for vaginal and rectal stimulation to
be used simultaneously if necessary.
Brachial Plexus Injuries
The structured recovery
scheme allows for a change in treatment plan from switch positions 1 to
2 to 3 as the muscles move from flaccid paralysis to flickers of movement
and electrically assisted movement respectively. The programs all
deliver a sequential frequency band to prevent tedium where treatment will
be needed for extended periods.
Drop Foot
Similar plans are available
for problems of the Sciatic Nerve with specific details for rehabilitation
of a drop foot.
The stimulation delivered
to the patient’s neuromuscular system produces predictable and repeatable
changes in the peripheral nervous system. It responds well to these
health giving signals even after many years of incomplete recovery and
poor functional activity.
Chronic Neurological Conditions
This potent signalling technique
is also useful when applied to “chronic neurological” disturbances of the
CNS. Here the treatment plans are less intensive. They are
applied as part of the hands-on treatment package to induce the feel of
normal movement and to correct the motor response.
Multiple Sclerosis
Specific conditions which
have responded well are supplied with an individual set of programs - protocols.
People with Multiple Sclerosis have found short treatment sessions of 20
minutes, 4 - 5 times per week at home invaluable for stimulating alternate
pathways and allowing for more natural movement patterns. This is
particularly beneficial where stiffness and spasticity are relieved.
Quality activity today, improves movement in the future.
Spinal Chord Injury
Following spinal chord injury,
recovery can be very slow and may continue for many years. The sequential
patterns of impulses are ideal for enriching the return of sensation; the
improved blood supply exerts trophic influence on the skin. The muscles
will be maintained electrically awaiting any recovery. The stimulation
prevents the formation of pressure sores and maintains good nutrition to
the area and venous return from the legs. The patient is encouraged
to work from the hips, distally monitoring changes in sensation and motor
responses.
Arthritis
Even in situations where
the nerve supply to the area is intact, muscle may atrophy or waste as
a result of pain, swelling and lack of normal use. Where joint surfaces
are worn or badly damaged, the joint needs protection from further injury.
Weight bearing exercises can aggravate the existing problem. Trophic
stimulation of the red muscle can take place in non-weight bearing situations
such as sitting and watching TV. Weight bearing exercises are emphasised
only when the joint is stable and protected from further injury.
The techniques are of particular relevance before and after joint replacement.
This results in a new joint which has pain free mobility and natural stability.
The benefits of the arthritis
program are described in the application note “Recover from Arthritis with
the Neuro-4".
Repeated Back Injury
The loss of red muscle through
pain/disuse cycles is present in chronic back injury. The loss of
abdominal tone is also noted by specialists in this field. The stimulation
programs help to build up joint protection when applied to the back muscles
and to relieve long standing aches and pains. The opportunity is
also presented to address the muscle imbalance between the abdominals -
back extensors using an agonist, antagonist reversal cycle.
Pain Relief
For an acute injury situation,
electrical stimulation is not the first treatment of choice. However,
pain relief is essential to prevent muscle deterioration and the Neuro
4 has three of the strongest pain relief programs available to date.
It may be used immediately, along with ice packs, strapping, etc.
It is also ideal for chronic
pain or any application where continuous T.E.N.S. stimulation is needed.
Knee Pain and Edema
This cycle is also recommended
for the problems which are encountered following prolonged or repeated
injuries to the knee joint. A generalised quadriceps/hamstrings reversal
technique is used initially, with the ability to focus upon a specific
area, i.e. vastus medialis as prescribed by the physiotherapist.
After accurate knee assessment a tailor made treatment plan should be used.
In some cases the Neuro 4 is used at the same time and in conjunction with
active exercise.
Where necessary both knees
may be treated with reciprocal stimulation of the right quadriceps, left
hamstrings, mimicking the walk cycle. These techniques have proved
invaluable during situations of joint bleeds for haemophiliacs. The
intensity of stimulation is maintained at a low level and the joints are
subject to minute pulls on the alternate tendons. This simulation
of the walking sequence helps to circulate fluid within the knee and to
resolve the acute episode. At the same time, the knee is building
up protection to prevent further injury and subsequent bleeding in the
future. Sports and Recent Injuries
Where the muscles need to
be kept in athletic condition following an injury, and where athletes will
not sacrifice training days, specific muscle groups may be kept in form
by a metabolic reprogram addressed in turn to each of the 3 muscle categories.
The trainer need only consider
training plans for the rest of the body leaving the injured area to the
Neuro 4.
The unit may also reach
its full potential in the field of prevention of injury in the future.
Muscles which have been injured previously or which are at risk of injury
because of the nature of the sport may be primed to a greater resilience.
• Hamstring stimulation
for sports.
• Training plans which
emphasise quadriceps build up.
• Increasing the aerobic
capacity of the anterior tibials where shin splints may inhibit performance.
• Building up the
back extensor to resist the strains of weight lifting.
• Adding shape to
muscles, a top up to body building weight training.
The possibilities are endless
in the drive to keep a body at top performance levels. The signals
are replicas of the body’s natural signalling system and produce the feelings
of well-being without stress or over training.
Painful Feet / Post Surgical
Feet
Following surgery, acutely
painful feet may persist and allow only a short time in weight bearing
pursuits per day. The pain relief programs are ideal and a much better
alternative to systemic pain relief. The Neuro 4 also offers the
opportunity to build up the small muscles which constitute the arches of
the feet, and to put the bounce back into gait. Switch position 3
of the foot program is a very strong stimulus which helps to mobilise the
segments of the foot and leads to a more natural heel-toe performance.
In the absence of specific foot pathology, a foot stimulation program after
a long hard day at work will do more to rejuvenate all the body system
than a long soak in water. These protocols for the foot allow for
walking during the treatment subjecting the many little muscles to health
giving signals throughout their various states of contraction and relaxation.
(Stepping into the future leaving faradic foot baths and all the electro
therapies which acted as precursors to trophic stimulation behind.)
Painful foot injury to the
feet during sport is a major problem and needs addressing at all different
levels. Strains, sprains and dropped arches affect and disable people
in all different walks of life. “Painful Feet” can disturb the whole
of the body and frequently keep people from work.
Post Polio Syndrome
Progressive muscle weakness
and fatigue can occur years after the original episode of Polio.
This is characterized by a decrease in electrical activity in the muscle,
a lack of blood supply, essential enzymes and nutrition.
Trophic Electrical Stimulation
restores the nutritional base to the deep muscle. The therapist can
select the very muscles needed for daily activity and work through a progressive
treatment plan until function is restored.
Synkinesis Following Facial
Palsy
During recovery from facial
palsy an imbalance can occur where the new nerve signals are dispersed
to the whole face.
The programs allow the therapist
to target specific muscle so that the new nerve develops controlled and
isolated movements.
