Treating Urinary Incontinence
with the ETS-90 Trophic Stimulator

Urinary Problems can result from many different causes.  In women, a common cause is childbirth; the pelvic floor muscles are weakened and can become inactive.  Advice to do pelvic exercises is given to most women, but it is difficult to exercise a muscle that you can’t see and don’t consciously use.  Many women try to exercise the pelvic muscles and believe they are doing it correctly, but are usually working the abdomen or gluts.  Cones can be used but if the muscle is very weak these are sometimes difficult to keep in place.
The best treatments are EMG biofeedback and electrical stimulation.  EMG allows the pelvic muscle to be exercised and the muscle activity measured.  Only the muscle being monitored will show up.  It can easily be seen  if it is exercised correctly.

Electrical stimulation will build up the pelvic floor muscle via a vaginal electrode; excellent results can be achieved very quickly.

DMI produces the ETS-90 Stimulator  specifically for the pelvic muscles, to treat stress and urge incontinence.  Several types of electrodes are available.

Trophic means “nourishing”.  The stimulation pulses have a direct and beneficial effect on the muscle fibres, nerve endings and blood flow in the postural muscles that hold the bladder in position, and on the urethral muscles and tissue.  The nerves and muscles that are responsible for continence begin working correctly again.

Condition: Stress Incontinence

Patient was age 30 when she presented to physiotherapist complaining that she leaked urine when she coughed, sneezed or whilst running.  She played hockey for her local club and really enjoyed the sport.  However she had recently ceased to play because of embarrassment due to the leaking problem.  She had first noticed the problem 3 years earlier but had tried to ignore it because she didn’t think it could be treated.

After her initial assessment she treated at home daily with the ETS-90 stimulator to strengthen her pelvic floor.  Four months later she was able to play a full game of hockey in her usual position of centre half and remain dry throughout.

It has been estimated that as many as 1 in 4 women have a problem and it is particularly prevalent amongst new mothers.  A small amount of leakage on sneezing for example is quickly treatable and prevents the problems from getting worse.
