Some facts on bladder control that your patients will be interested in –

Patients often seek help from their health care provider in managing urinary leakage.  Now, physiotherapists and nurses have the tools and techniques to correct it.  This is replacing the physician tasks of medications and surgery with the physiotherapy and nursing tasks of therapy and education.

The patient uses biofeedback and muscle stimulation techniques to find the pubo-coccygeus muscle, to exercise it and to strengthen it.  Very rarely is surgery needed to correct urinary incontinence.

Many patients are unhappy with surgery because of the long recovery times and that the results usually last only four to five years.  There are little muscles in the pelvic floor that you must strengthen to become dry.  There is no other way to achieve a lasting cure.

An unstable bladder can be very bothersome.  The condition responds well to  non-invasive treatment with a nerve stimulator.

Doing Kegel exercises correctly without using some type of aid is very difficult — almost impossible for most patients.  This can be either a perineometer, biofeedback, stimulation or weighted cone. ? At one biofeedback clinic, in an intake test of almost 100 patients, only two of them could do Kegel exercises properly.  Yet all had been instructed in the technique.  So, if you find that Kegel exercises do not work for you, don't give up.  Find a therapist with the right equipment to teach you the correct method.

There is a lot of focus on male impotence, but the female side of the problem is usually overlooked.  Pelvic floor therapy to correct bladder leakage will start the nerves and muscles to work correctly again.  This generally has a definite positive affect on sexual arousal, response, intensity and endurance.

In some Asian cultures, women use round metal balls to increase their vaginal dexterity and strength.  Aquaflex cones use the same principle but are more effective for continence and sexual purposes.  Their conical shape causes a spreading of the muscle tissue as it is pulled downward by its weight.  We have never had an Aquaflex user go though a divorce . . .

There are a range of products to use at home.  With the FemiScan Home Trainer, the therapist loads your personal exercise program into its memory.  You use the home trainer daily; follow the prompts.  It tells you if you are exercising correctly.  Other patients have said that they love the product.  This is documented in a detailed patient outcome survey.
