A circular saw accident on June 2, 2002 produced a severe laceration injury to two fingers of the patient's right hand. On presentation at hospital emergency, the attending physician recommended amputation. Instead, the patient elected to try laser therapy at a Montreal clinic recently equipped with a bio-stimulation scanning laser in an attempt to salvage the fingers.

Upon commencement of laser therapy on June 9, the wounds showed developing necrosis and infection. The fingers were treated every 2-3 days, using a Biophoton laser. At each session, the aperture was set to uniformly scan both fingers with a dose of 4-5 Joules/cm2. The visible component stimulates the surface tissue and the infra red component stimulates the deep tissue to promote revascularization. By June 21 the healing process is well underway.

On follow up, two years later, the patient has full recovery of the first finger, but some stiffness and limited range-of-motion remaining in the second finger, due to the deep nature of the injury. The patient is grateful that the therapist was able to save the fingers by using the laser treatment.
